Let Your Creative Side Live a Little!

keep-calm-and-show-your-creative-sideFor kicks and giggles, I recently took one of those Facebook tests asking if I’m a right brain or left brain dominant person (translation, creative or logical). Not surprisingly, it came back with my being right brain dominant. I’d be further curious to know the percentage of one over the other to tell how strongly dominant, but give it time and someone will design that Facebook test, too! The results, though I took the test for pure amusement, added explanation as to why I gravitate so strongly towards the arts, reading, writing, sewing & crafts, etc.

Where would you fall if you took that same test? If you already know you’re right brain dominant (creative), what do you do for yourself and your brain to exercise that side? I personally enjoy arts & crafts, primarily sewing, but also re-purposing items. If it involves power tools, all the better! Yes, I’m one of those weird females that enjoys a hardware or DIY store more than a clothing or shoe store. Is it wrong I know all my local hardware store staff by name and they know mine? I don’t think so… Anyway, getting back on track. If it’s easier for you to feed your creative side by scheduling time to do so, then check some options coming up in Delavan.

A Glass of Art_Pour and SipIf you’ve ever wanted to do one of the multitude of Paint & Sips out there, but felt a little intimidated by them as far as skill set, being right brain and creative or not, here’s one that’s a little different. Pour & Sip is described as “a fun and fabulous technique that creates unique paintings you’ll love to do over and over again, with no two paintings ever being the same, and you’ll be amazed at the results”. This new workshop will allow you to create a beautiful 12″ x 12″ painting, while enjoying a cocktail or two and time with friends. It’s offered this Friday, Sept. 22, from 6 – 9 pm, at A Glass of Art & More, W8744 Lake Road, Delavan. Cost is $40/person, with discounts for groups of 4 or  more, but space is limited to 12 people overall. You can register on their Facebook page (A Glass of Art & More) by clicking ‘going’ under the event listing.

Watershed_Fall Harvest Paint and SipIf you’re not intimidated by the standard Paint & Sips, then The Watershed Saloon, 4009 S. Shore Drive, is offering a “Fall Harvest” version this Saturday, Sept. 23, from 12 – 3 pm. No experience is necessary, as you’ll be guided step-by-step through painting a 16″ x 20″ canvas that you can take home and proudly display that day. All supplies, aprons and first drink are included in the cost of $35/person. Reservations are required, so call them at 262.725.6445 and get your spot now! Suggestion is to plan for arriving 15-30 minutes early to get checked in, find a seat and get that first cocktail. Your creative time begins promptly at noon!

Whiskey Ranch_Pallet Painting PartyIf your schedule is already full for this weekend, then on Wednesday, Sept. 27, from 6 – 9 pm, Whiskey Ranch, at W9002 State Road 11, is having a Pallet Painting Party! How’s that for a canvas – a pallet! Specifically billed as a Packers/Bears Pallet Painting Party with the Packers/Bears football game being the next night, how fun to kick off the friendly rivalry like this! Cost is $35/person, includes supplies and a drink ticket for the game the next night. Come in your preferred team’s NFL wear, paint up a storm, take advantage of drink specials and win some giveaways! Call 262.882.2800 or stop in to reserve your spot!

If your creative side isn’t feeling the painting thing and might actually want more stimulation, then oh my goodness, this will do it! Thursday, Sept. 28 through Sunday, Oct. 1, is the 2017 Sisters Shop Hop. Seven area shops are participating, with Needles ‘n Pins Yarn Shoppe (W9034 County Rd. A) and Studio S Fiber Arts (W8903 County Rd. A) representing Delavan. There will be demos, food, prizes and fun! From each shop there will be the chance to win a $100 gift basket full of goodies with items handpicked from that shop to help you “Make It Simple”. One lucky person will win a new Janome 3160 sewing machine as the grand prize of the event by simply visiting all seven shops, getting their ‘passport’ punched and turning it in when completed. I’ll certainly take a new sewing machine if someone tells me I won it! Hours for the Shop Hop are 10 am – 5 pm, Thursday through Saturday, and noon to 3 pm on Sunday. Plenty of time to get to all seven shops! Besides Needles ‘n Pins Yarn Shoppe and Studio S Fiber Arts representing Delavan, the Shop Hop includes Sawdust & Stitches in Elkhorn, Kari’s Sew Unique and Woodland Quilts in Whitewater, The Quilt Patch in Fort Atkinson, and Loose Threads in Milton. What a fun way to shop local and get inspired with new creative ideas!

What Says Fall to You?

Cooler temps, windows open overnight but needing to pull up the comforter, picking clothes to wear from the other side of the closet, kids back in school, overabundance of zucchini… What has you thinking of Fall being near? The autumnal equinox is September 22, so it’s almost official no matter how we might want to deny it. So what else makes it Fall for you? Leaves changing? Corn mazes? Pumpkin patches? Finally needing to wear a sweater or socks? Whatever it is, Fall is coming and with it comes Fall Fun in Delavan!

This Saturday, September 16, is Scarecrow Fest in Downtown Delavan! Layout 1From 9 am – 8 pm there’s a plethora of things to do! (Do you like that word – plethora? Hahaha)  The Craft & Flea Market is in Tower Park from 9 am – 5 pm. Free pumpkin painting is from 1 – 3 pm (or until they run out of pumpkins). The petting zoo by Ge Funny Farm is outside the library from 10 am -noon. Build your own scarecrow ($10 fee) is at 2nd Street and Walworth Ave. from 11 am – 1:30 pm. There is of course food, sales at the downtown businesses, the 2nd annual Quilt Show, and the always popular Duck Raffle. One of my favorite parts is the pie & cake auction – both the silent and the live auction – as there are some fantastic bakers around the area! Scarecrow Fest is guaranteed fun!

For a little more adult fun, Walk & Wine in the Gardens, at Congdon Gardens that isCongdon Gardens_walk and wine, is coming up Thursday, September 21. Enjoy a glass of wine and appetizers, 5 – 7 pm, while taking in the ever-changing scenery and learning about the exciting new projects taking place on site. With six different gardens, each featuring their own unique design and planted with Midwestern-hearty plants, you’ll find inspiration for your own gardens. Congdon Gardens is also a beautiful and tranquil place to relax and enjoy the surroundings.

Apple Fest at Apple Barn Orchard & Winery will be double the fun this year as it’s running for two weekends – September 23 & 24 and September 30 & October 1! A weekend of apple cider donuts, apple picking, hayrides through the orchard, Apple Barn_hayride in orcharda bounce house for the kids, live music entertainment, and so much more, and to be able to have that much fun two weekends in a row! Yowza! Parking and admission are free, but the memories are priceless! I’m making a list already of what to get – turtle caramel apple, bottle of wine, bag of apple cider donuts, bottle of wine, bag of baking apples, bottle of wine… Has anyone noticed a pattern in my list?!

Lake Lawn Resort welcomes the change in seasons with two events: Oktoberfest, September 30, and Fall Family Festival, October 6-9. Oktoberfest will include German, Seasonal and Craft beers, a variety of Bavarian Festival foods and live entertainment by Twin Lakes Trio Polka Band, all under a lighted tent at the lakefront, from 6 – 10 pm. Can you taste the Beer Cheese Soup, Grilled Bratwurst with Caraway Sauerkraut on a Pretzel Bun and Black Forest Cake, all washed down with a beverage?! Yum! Then to dance off all the calories by doing a few polkas… so viel Spaß! (Who can translate?)

Come back for Fall Family Festival, an extended weekend for family and friends to gather at the lake, that is packed with Fall-themed events, including scarecrow building, pumpkin decorating, donut making, hayrides, movie night, the Milwaukee Brewers’ Famous Racing Sausages, a delicious Fall Harvest Buffet, and many more family-friendly activities. Giant Jenga or pumpkin bowling anyone?!

This is only the start of what’s happening for Fall Fun in Delavan, so get ready for more to come and find your adventure in Delavan!
