Let’s talk Turkey and Deer – Thanksgiving and Deer Widows’ Weekend

People always think that when the colder weather creeps up, everything slows down for the season. This could not be further from the truth in Delavan, WI! Although we do pack up our shorts and store the boats for the winter, November has a lot going on.

Deer Widows’ Weekend

The opening of the 2018 deer hunting season is November 17th. For hunters and non-hunters alike, this date means something… the start Deer Widows Weekend! Come hang out at Staller Estate Winery’s Ladies Day! Enjoy some wine, and have some fun crafting and painting wine glasses! Guys, as well as gals, can get a taste of autumn by sampling a selection of Sonoma Cellar’s favorites at their Autumn Getaway Tasting. Ladies get a special treat while their guys are away at Ol’ Wisco Bar & Grill’s Magic Mike show. A Las Vegas styled choreographed production, also doubling as a fundraiser/ pet food drive for Lakeland Animal Shelter!

Pre-Thanksgiving

Next week, the hunters will be back, and family members will be gathering as the Thanksgiving holiday approaches. Collect the little ones and bring them to the Aram Public Library to learn more about Native Americans and the true history of the Thanksgiving at We’re the Same, but Different program on November 19th from 4 – 5 pm.  Kids will enjoy arts, dance, and culture shared by local Native Americans.

The library’s DIY Make and Take Holiday Pie class is a great way to enjoy family time and tackle some of the holiday prep on November 20 from 5:30 – 7:30 pm. Your pie will be ready to bake at home or freeze to save for future events. Space is limited, so please call and check for availability at 262-728-3111. If the family is looking for something fun to do while waiting for the big meal, scoot out to the Delavan Lake Store and test your knowledge at their Pie & Music Trivia, on November 21st from 6:30 – 8:30 pm.

Thanksgiving

Thursday is the big day! Some people start bright and early, getting side dishes, pies and of course the turkey set and ready to go in the oven just before the family begins to gather. For those who are visiting in Delavan this holiday or those who just don’t like to cook, you do not have to miss out!

Enjoy a beautiful view of Delavan Lake while you indulge in Lake Lawn Resort’s annual Thanksgiving Day Feast buffet in the Frontier Restaurant. To go orders must be placed by Monday, November 19, 2018.

If you follow the Delavan Lake shore line, another part of the community comes together to celebrate the things they are thankful for. They invite you to join them at Delavan’s Community Thanksgiving Dinner. The Town of Delavan Community Park pavilion will be open from 11 am to 3 pm serving complimentary meals to all guests and making deliveries to home bound friends. Stuffed full of fun at Scarecrow Fest 2018!

If you have driven through Delavan lately, you have seen the scarecrows popping up on the light posts downtown. Scarecrow Fest is Delavan’s annual tradition that celebrates the beginning of the fall season with the best dressed scarecrows you ever did see! Scarecrows will be “On Parade” along the historic brick road through October hoping that you’ll vote for them as your favorite! Local business and citizens create each scarecrow with a theme and name…and I’ll tell ya, the creativity NEVER ceases to surprise me! Local merchants will join their scarecrow friends for special sidewalk sales and full fledge festivities on Saturday, September 15th, 2018.

SCF_Pumpkin-Painting-2014-300x225This festival spans along the brick road and into multiple parks throughout historic downtown Delavan. Begin at Water Tower Park for the craft fair & flea market, demos hosted by local businesses, food, and music by Cheryl Niemo & the Down Home Boys. Bring the kids to paint pumpkins, or say hello to the animals at the petting zoo at the Aram Public Library. A scarecrow festival would not be complete without making a scarecrow of your own! Build a Scarecrow and take it home. We’ll have the supplies to make a scarecrow and helpers. This is great for the whole family!

Other activities that you can take part in throughout the day are a narrated Walldog SCF_duck raffleWagon Tour, a pie and cake sale outside of Remember When, and the 3rd Annual Quilt Show throughout merchant store fronts. At 2:30pm, an endloader will dump the duckies into a pool for the pickin’ at the Duck Raffle. The rubber ducks that land in the middle of the circle of kiddy pools are drawn by the kids and the numbers are written down in order. The first matching ticket number wins the $150 cash, followed by other great prizes!! Tickets can be purchased 3 for $5 or $2 each.

As the grand finale for the Scarecrow Festival and the season at the Phoenix Park Bandshell, Andrew Sedlak will open for the infamous Pink Freud, harmonized with vibrant laser lights by the Laser Fusion Light Show.
